Tailored Lampshades

A two day course in which you will be shown all of the skills needed to make your own tailored lampshade : how to bind the lampshade frame, make a template and cut fabric for your lampshade, line the lampshade, and finish it with your own choice of trimmings. The course involves both hand and machine sewing. No previous experience of either is required, just a passion for textiles and the patience to sit and enjoy the process of sewing in a room full of fellow textile enthusiasts.

At the end of the course we will discuss sourcing of frames, materials and other supplies. Students will leave with the confidence, knowledge (and enthusiasm!) to go on to create their own beautiful lampshades after the course has finished.

I will supply lampshades frames and suitable lining fabric. Students should bring their own basic sewing kit (scissors, needles, pins, tape measure, thimble), their own choice of top fabric (one metre of full width fabric will be sufficient) and a sewing machine if they have one. Suitable fabrics include light to medium weight cottons, linens and silks.

Scatter Cushions

A day-long workshop in which students will be taught to make their own zipped and piped scatter cushions.  This course involves machine-stitching and is best suited to those with experience of using a sewing machine (even if it's only a little).

I will provide a feather-filled cushion pad, zips and piping cord. Students should bring their own sewing machine (and, most importantly, a zipper or piping foot!), 1m of their chosen fabric (and a second choice of fabric if they want to make contrasting piping) and a basic sewing kit.

Visible Mending with Lizzie David

Join us for a morning of creative darning with visible mender Lizzie David (@little_moth_mends). Lizzie David is a clothes mender living and working in Bath. A fine art graduate who loves textiles and colour, she has been visibly mending knitwear and woven textiles since 2020. She finds mending the antithesis of fast fashion culture, a mindful way of reconnecting with our clothes in a creative and expressive way, and a simple way of reducing our environmental impact on the world. She undertakes mending commissions and shares the joy of darning with others through her in-person workshops in the local community.

Learn how to mend knitwear by hand, using simple woven darning techniques.

Visible mending is a beautiful way to rejuvenate your clothes and reconnect with them, repairing rather than replacing.

Bring along a knitted or woven garment in need of repair. Moth eaten sweaters and holey socks are ideal. All materials will be provided, no experience necessary

Ticket price includes refreshments. NB this workshop is only bookable via Lizzie’s instagram or eventbrite page here
